Homer never gives the voyage in miles. This route follows the traditional geography associated with it, using real locations where possible and traditional identifications for the rest, with distances scaled and adjusted to 450 miles and 25 waypoints. Every walk, run, or treadmill session your phone records brings you nearer to Ithaca.

IIThe road ahead

From the fall of Troy all the way to Ithaca.

The route picks up after the fall of Troy, on the shores of the Aegean, and follows Odysseus through the whole voyage: the Cyclops, Circe, the Sirens, Scylla and Charybdis, and the Land of the Dead, until he reaches Ithaca at last and takes back his home.

Each waypoint pairs an illustration after John Flaxman’s classical outline drawings with a moment and a quotation from the epic. Reach one, and the next leg of the voyage opens. For a shorter crossing that begins with Telemachus, try The Odyssey.
